Crowdfunding Highlight: Magical Kitties Save the Day
“Every Magical Kitty has a human. Every human has a Problem. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, you need to use your magical powers to solve problems and save the day!”
This new role playing Game from Atlas games combines the cuteness of kittens with the core elements of role-playing games. The goal of this scrappy RPG is to give children a taste for RPG adventures. The game is designed to be quickly explained, role play heavy, rules light, and a lore that is easy for children to latch on to. Magical Kitties even boasts streamlining the rules to the point that older children can game master the adventures for their friends. For a small collection of rule books, cards, and dice this game set out to accomplish a lot. Based on the fantastic support from the community it appears Atlas may have hit their mark.
When building their kitty character, players have 3 attributes. Players assign a certain number of dice to each attribute and cannot exceed 6 dice per attribute. Players also pick a talent for their character that offers them an extra dice when used. Higher rolls on skill checks mean the kitties are more likely to be successful. Campaigns revolve around the Problems the characters’ humans are encountering. The difficulty of the Problem will determine how long and how much planning it will take the characters to overcome the issue at hand. Since the game is very role play heavy it is encouraged that players contribute to the storytelling experience. This might take the form of asking the players what the monster in the closet looks like or what they find once they break into the previously locked room.
Magical Kitties may have been intended for kids, but it would be fun at any age. Adults and RPG enthusiasts who love adorable kittens would also truly enjoy this game. Experienced players can use the game as an exercise in handling conflict without violence or thinking about problems from a child’s perspective. The rules light system makes the game less punishing for players and GMs wanting to try something different.
I am curious to see what kinds of negate abilities the Problems have. Can a magical kitty be thwarted by a closed door that they wish to be open? Are kitties driven by a compulsion to knock all cups off flat services? Is loudly yowling at 3 AM part of a ritual to keep their humans safe? Can’t wait to see what kind of cat puns and feline fun unfolds with this game.
Magical Kitties Save the Day is live on Kickstarter now until August 15th. The Kickstarter has a wide variety of levels to pledge at. If you love it and want to buy copies for your friends the game will be releasing in FLGS (friendly local gaming store) next year with retail at $25 for the base starter set.
