We are heading back into the Spider-Verse!
On the heels of a critically acclaimed and viewer adored introduction to the Spider-Verse, we have been waiting patiently on the next installment. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar and grossed almost $400 million at the box office. We all knew the film would get a sequel, and fans received their verification from producer Amy Pascal in a recent interview with io9.
“We are definitely hard at work on the sequel,” Pascal said. “You can expect another movie.”
The sequel technically went into production in November. The story is expected to once again center on Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore. Jake Johnson (Spider-Man), Haley Steinfeld (Spider-Gwen), and the rest of the characters are expected to reprise their roles.
Marvel and Sony are expecting big things from the Spider-Verse. Solo projects around Spider-Gwen, Nicholas Cage’s Spider-Noir, and a spinoff cartoon for John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham have all been heavily speculated. Sony knows this franchise could blow open in a very real way, and they are doing their best to take it slow.
Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have both addressed future Spider-Verse projects. In an interview with comicbook.com, Miller stated “We still have the horse. We’ve got to put the cart behind it. So we’ll let it ride down the road a few blocks before we get too big for our britches.”
Lord added, “You could imagine all of these other things. So it’s music to our ears that people could imagine a Spider-Noir film and the Spider-Ham insane cartoon.”
The next feature will have so many great story options. Comic book purists are hopeful that the movies will borrow from the comics and introduce the Inheritors. A deeper dive into Spider-Gwen’s relationship with Morales, the return of the Kingpin, and Spider-Man 2099 have all been speculated. We expect to hear more in the near future.
What we do know, is that the Spider-Verse is full of exciting stories, and Sony really brought it in the first installment. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse far exceeded expectations, and there is no reason to think expanding this world isn’t going to continue to raise the bar.
