The Ten: MCU Characters Keanu Reeves Should Play
As cinephiles continue to throw money at anything Marvel Cinematic Universe and Keanu Reeves, we are all wondering and waiting patiently for the action power couple to become “internet official”. Kevin Feige, MCU Kingpin, has confirmed he has had multiple conversations with the John Wick star, with a character yet to be determined.
“We talk to him for almost every film we make,” Feige said. “We talk to Keanu Reeves about. I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”
So do we Kevin… so do we.
As a band of full tilt nerds here at Project-Nerd, we have wrestled not with whether Reeves should be in the MCU (that is clearly affirmed), but with whom shall he play? We have thrown darts, consulted our Ouija Board, and even had our palms read to come up with the ten MCU characters Keanu Reeves should play (read: talked about it on Facebook). We finally picked five heroes and five villains because the guy has the acting chops to pull anything off.
Honorable Mentions: Taskmaster, Legion, Ghost Rider, Gambit, Silver Surfer, & Adam Warlock.
- VILLAIN – Kraven the Hunter
Keanu Reeves can fire a gun, can track an enemy, and has that deep, raspy voice needed to pull off the clever Kraven. His John Wick-like tenacity to finish a mission and his flowing dark locks make him a good fit to play the Spider-man villain. I’m not sure anyone else could pull off a lion head vest, and Reeves could wear that to Starbucks tomorrow and look completely normal. Can he pull off a Russian accent? Have you seen Siberia? He was born to play a Russian bad guy. He was also born to play Ted Theodore Logan, so take that for what it’s worth.
- HERO – John Wick
Stay with us here. While obviously not comic cannon or a Disney property, Disney can buy pretty much whatever they want, so let’s go! What is the price tag for Summit Entertainment, anyway? Pocket change for Disney, I’m sure. Besides, tell us you wouldn’t dig watching John Wick take down M.O.D.O.K. or Chameleon. What we do know is that John Wick can hold his own in any story. This hero choice is clearly the biggest outlier, but if Mickey wants Wick, he goes and makes it happen. This movie could potentially break Hollywood in the very best way possible.
- VILLAIN – The Mandarin
Sure we already saw “The Mandarin” in Iron Man 3, but that doesn’t count. Plus, with the release of the Marvel One Shot All Hail the King, we know the real Mandarin is still out there. What better way to properly bring the Ten Rings to the MCU than by having the ACTUAL immortal Keanu Reeves playing the villain? The Mandarin has a marvelous backstory, above standard supporting characters, and enough real power to carry a movie and a couple of sequels. The Ten Rings demands the REAL Mandarin! And so do we.
- HERO – Wolverine
There isn’t a true fan of Marvel who wanted to see Hugh Jackman depart the role of Wolverine. As far as we’re concerned, he is just toying with us in the worst game of PUNK’D we’ve ever been a part of. But let’s just say Jackman IS done. There is no way the MCU, now with rights to the X-Men, doesn’t introduce Wolverine in the near future. He is an absolute cash cow, and so badass. We believe that an established superstar like Reeves would be a much safer reboot than an up and comer. Make no mistake, we still want Jackman.
- VILLAIN – Mephisto
The fact is, this villain is more than likely to be relegated to Marvel television now with Ghost Rider and Helstrom confirmed on HULU. He makes a much more sense for their stories. The character himself, however, is a Keanu Reeves mashup if ever there was one. It is John Constantine meets Kevin Lomax meets Neo meets Donnie Barksdale (deep dive); all with the desire to exploit humanity’s fear of Satan and eternal damnation. Plus he’d look really cool as both dapper Mephisto and raging red demon Mephisto.
- HERO – Nova
The MCU has given us the Nova Corps, and Feige confirmed that Richard Rider is on the shortlist for not-to-distant future intros stating, “Nova is… if we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board”. Nova is or will be, going into development soon. Keanu Reeves has the leadership ability to run a team, he has the moxie to go solo, and he can pull off any look. This one may be a stretch, but we want both Nova and Reeves in the MCU so bad, why not put them together?
- VILLAIN – Kang the Conqueror
If Avengers: Endgame gave the future of the MCU anything, it gave us the opportunity to deep dive into time travel. You don’t get time travel in the comics without Kang the Conqueror. Kang is a time thorn in the side of various individual heroes across the Marvel comic platform, but his ability to exist in several timelines and across time itself, usually calls for several whole Avengers teamups. We’re not overly fond of covering Reeves’ beautiful face for any MCU role, but he has the stature to be the biggest bad of the next collection. “Keanu Reeves Pens Six Film Deal to Play Big Bad”. We can already hear the money leaving our wallets.
- HERO – Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic)
The MCU has been firing on all cylinders for years, but all true Marvel fans know that not having Mr. Fantastic and the first family of Marvel has held them back. With the Fantastic Four home at last, Kevin Feige and his team have to put together the perfect cast with the perfect story to dig this franchise out of the trash bin. Step one: cast Mr. Fantastic. Reed Richards is smarter than Tony Stark and Bruce Banner combined, and with Stark no longer with us (R.I.P), the “MCU genius” role needs to be backfilled. Enter Keanu Reeves. Big name, big presence, and the ability to carry a franchise. Sure, he will need to channel some of his Bill & Ted chops for the quirkiness of Richards, but it is more than doable.
- VILLAIN (kind of) – Namor the Submariner
We know that Reeves is mid-50s, but let’s be real. The guy hasn’t aged in 30 years. Take his shirt off, give him a speedo and pointy ears, and let him rule the oceans! Yes, we did just get a decent Aquaman movie, so it would seem old hat by fans who are not familiar with Marvel vs. DC, but Namor needs to be in the MCU. In the comics, Namor plays the hero/villain better than anyone, but the stories of villainy would make incredible cinema.
A Superman vs. Batman-like movie where Wakanda and Atlantis go to full-fledged war (only executed much better), would be putting Chadwick Boseman and Keanu Reeves toe-to-toe. Triple movie ticket prices, standing the entire time, and no blinking the entire movie? Um… Yes please. The oldest Avenger is LONG overdue in the MCU. Just like Keanu Reeves.
- HERO – Moon Knight
Stop me when you hear something Keanu Reeves can’t do: a heavyweight boxer, then a U.S. Marine, then a CIA operative, then a mercenary, then the embodiment of Khonshu the Moon God, then killed and brought back to life. Take all of this, wrap it in a bitchin’ costume with psychotic villains, and you get Moon Knight (Marc Spector). The origin story alone could be two movies. The future of the character has so many interesting twists and turns along the way with family betrayal, the murder of loved ones, struggles with mental health, and the list goes on. The MCU has done nothing like Moon Knight, so it would also be a very different type of story. You know who does edgy movies really well? Yeah… Keanu Reeves.
The moral of the story here is that the MCU needs Keanu Reeves. There are several options to bring the coveted action star into the franchise, but where he actually lands is anyone’s guess. The biggest hope is that he is around for a few films and not wasted on a throw away character a la Ben Kingsley. Come on Kevin Feige, lock this one down!
What do you think? Did your MCU character pick make the list? Who did we leave off? Let us know in the comments!
