With the third season of GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) about to premiere in early August on Netflix, what better way to get fans hyped up for the new season than by publishing an off spin of the show through a comic series? IDW Publishing has teamed up with Netflix to create a four-issue miniseries that gives readers an in-depth look at their favorite women wrestlers, or to introduce new readers/viewers to these glamorous yet diverse characters.
GLOW, the show, is based on a 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit. The show focuses on how the promotion was made, how the characters were created and the struggles that many promoters like David McLane overcame to make women’s wrestling a serious aspect within the professional wrestling community. Though fictitious, the soon to be three season show dives in to how the evolution of women’s wrestling took off and became mainstream.
The comic GLOW brings together the women and the tales of both their career and personal lives. The first issue of the miniseries will bring laughter, as the ladies learn that they will be competing in Wrestlefest, a popular festival devoted to wrestling 24/7 for 72 hours.
In the beginning of the story, the ladies find out that they are ahead of schedule and could possibly have a wrestle free weekend until Sam Sylvia, the director of GLOW, finds out that several advertisers were pulling out from helping Sylvia promote his new business. Because of that, he agrees that his women wrestlers will attend Wrestlefest and will put on the best show that anyone has ever seen. Well the idea is great, but the reaction from the ladies is not.
The GLOW team all-state the same issue, they don’t feel fully prepared to take on other competitors besides themselves, since they have had numerous matches among their roaster. Even though the complaints keep piling up, Sylvia still says the event is happening, but one more thing to add to the already chaos, each of the wrestlers must pay their way to the event.
From finding lost animals, to playing at trivia night to win money and even putting on a wrestling performance in front of people walking the boardwalks of Venice Beach, each wrestler gets their money together to go to Wrestlefest.
Once they get to the festival, they realize they are not the only women’s wrestling team there. Their opponents are the Real Gorgeous Lady Wrestlers, who have twice the number of teammates as the GLOW team.
Just think, this is the first comic of the miniseries. So much more is to come. Who will win at Wrestlefest? Can GLOW survive RGLW?
