‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ Series Ordered at WarnerMedia
If you listen to The Nerdcast by Project-Nerd, you know some of us are excited for the upcoming Dune film from director Denis Villeneuve. Now see us get even more excited as WarnerMedia has officially ordered a series, Dune: The Sisterhood, also from Villeneuve.
Set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel series, Dune: The Sisterhood follows a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.
Villeneuve will direct the pilot with Jon Spaihts set to write. Spaihts also co-wrote the upcoming film’s screenplay too.
“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” Villeneuve said. “Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.”
Although Herbert’s novel series had previously been adapted into a cult favorite film from David Lynch in 1984, Warner is all in on the Dune film reboot which stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dave Bautista, amongst others. We have also previously seen a television series, at least limited series, from the Dune universe too, with SyFy previously airing Dune in 200 and Children of Dune in 2003.
Herbert published Dune in 1965. The novel went on to be recognized as one of the most important sci-fi novels of all time and sits atop a number of Best Of lists. Herbert eventually wrote five sequels, while his son Brian and Kevin J. Anderson went on to write multiple new entries in the series.
Dune: The Sisterhood marks the third series order for WarnerMedia’s streaming platform, along with Tokyo Vice starring Ansel Elgort and Love Life starring Anna Kendrick with Paul Feig executive producing.
Elizabeth Banks is rumored to be adapting the podcast Over My Dead Body and the internet has been buzzing for a while about the also rumored animated Gremlins series. We’ll see soon all of what Warner does with their streaming service.
The Dune film reboot is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 20, 2020.
