Gloomhaven is on Steam
Gloomhaven is becoming a manageable size. The 2017 board game release from Cephalofair Games is becoming digitized and coming to Steam this Summer! For those unfamiliar with the game, it is a behemoth. Not just in terms of how great of a game it is, but also in how physically large it is. I’m pretty sure it weighs around 30 pounds. This monstrosity is a destroyer of gaming shelves, but worth the space because it is massively fun. It has won awards galore since its release in 2017 and continues to do so.
This game being converted to digital format and is going to be a game changer for Gloomhaven. The game’s size, weight, and complexity has made it somewhat unobtainable for some gamers. A transfer of this robust board game to Steam is going to allow a whole slew of new players to have access to this adventure. Steam has the following description about the project on their website:
Whether you are drawn to Gloomhaven by the call of adventure or by the call of gold glimmering in the dark, your fate will surely be the same. Flaming Fowl and Asmodee Digital have teamed up to make you once again live through the epic journey of Gloomhaven… digitally!
Our development minions are working hard so that you can discover or rediscover this one of a kind tactical, turn-based RPG.
In this rogue-like dungeon-crawling adaptation of the famous board game, you will journey through terrifying randomly generated dungeons, fight against increasingly horrific and powerful foes…or die trying.
Why this is amazing.
This project solves many of the issues gamers have with Gloomhaven. The set-up for Gloomhaven can take hours, getting the feel for the mechanics and the rules can take another few hours, and then the game takes up a lot of space. For gamers who do not have space to set up the game and leave it up this can make playing through a campaign daunting. The digital version bypasses all of these concerns.
The biggest concern myself and other players have, are in regards to how the campaign modes work; will we be able to play with our friends and what happens if a friend can’t make it to game night. To quell fears Gloomhaven released this press release on their Facebook page:
ONLINE COOPERATIVE PLAY
You will be able to play in both the Adventure and Campaign mode cooperatively with up to three friends, depending on the size of your group of mercenaries.
Not to worry, we’re designing this system so that even an Inox can work it out! Game modes are not split into a selection of cooperative or single player; instead you can simply invite people to your game to play with you in any mode. Hosts can assign character(s) to whoever joins their game.
Not to worry! Saves and game modes are not split between solo and cooperative play, nor are they constrained to specific members participating. Simply load up a game you were previously playing with others to continue it solo or to invite less, new, or completely different players to it. But be sure to keep your save for later if you’re wanting to keep playing from that point with specific people!
