Disney Gives Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie to ‘Game of Thrones’ Creators Benioff and Weiss
Disney has announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will helm the next Star Wars film in December of 2022. While speaking at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications Summit, Disney’s Bob Iger confirmed that the December 16th, 2022 release date would be in the hands of Benioff and Weiss.
Following the release of dates for every Disney project through 2027, many speculated who would take over the Star Wars franchise after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The most speculated to lead the next phase were Episode IX director Rian Johnson and the Game of Thrones creators. Most still surmise the project will begin a new trilogy, but that has yet to be confirmed.
At this point, fans of the franchise have plenty to look forward to with the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga later this year, two confirmed and one more likely live-action Star Wars series coming to Disney+, and theatrical release dates well into the later parts of the 2020s. The viability of this franchise is not slowing down, and LucasFilms and Disney think they have a winner in their next team.
