Disney Sets Dates for Star Wars, Avatar, MCU Phase 4 and More Through 2027
Our entertainment overlords at Disney have rolled out their lineup of movie releases through 2027. The biggest news being their chokehold on the holiday season box office. Disney announced they will alternate holiday releases between Star Wars and Avatar until December 2027. That means we get four more Avatar releases (though later than previously projected), and three untitled Star Wars films after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Included in their release schedule are eight untitled projects coming from Marvel Studios, Fox Studios holdovers Artemis Fowl and New Mutants, eight untitled Disney live-action remakes, a few unnamed Pixar projects, and various other placeholders for the next seven years.
Star Wars will finish their Skywalker saga this year with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This means the three other Star Wars films are a bit of a mystery. Many speculate it may be a new trilogy from Star Wars IX director Rian Johnson. Other rumors include a different trilogy, potentially a take on The Knights of the Old Republic from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. As long as the franchise has this kind of creative firepower, Star Wars will stay on the release schedule well into the future.
The folks at Marvel Studios are doing their best to keep their heads above their Uncle Scrooge-like money piles while planning the next phase of the MCU. The eight projected titles are expected to include a Black Widow movie, sequels to Black Panther & Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3. Another all-but-confirmed Eternals movie would take up the fifth of eight slots. Speculation of the remaining titles includes another team-up film, a Young Avengers film, a Sam Wilson led Captain America film, and Disney’s potential first take on the Fantastic Four. It is the golden age of comic book movies, and Disney & Marvel are not taking their foot off the gas anytime soon.
The current box office king (Avengers: Endgame is coming for the crown), Avatar, has been delayed yet again, but we did get the release schedule for the final four movies. Those excited to explore more of Pandora have been patiently waiting for the next installment. While the next release date isn’t scheduled for more than two years from now, it has to give fans a little breathing room to know they will get the next four movies in a timely and orderly fashion.
Disney, known for diversifying their reign, is also powering forward with their live-action remakes of previously adored animated projects. We know we are getting Aladdin, Lion King, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil still this year. Disney’s schedule revealed Mulan, set for March 2020, and the Emma Stone led Cruella, a 101 Dalmatians project. There are an astonishing eight other live-action projects slated in 2020 and 2021 alone. Expect all of your favorite films to get the live-action treatment.
Others in the release included Fox properties Artemis Fowl, and New Mutants. New Mutants is expected to be the last Marvel film under the true Fox banner, and it seems to have been pushed back yet again.
We are excited to see Indiana Jones back on the release schedule. Though Dr. Jones’ latest adventure was not as well received as previous films, it will be fun to get Harrison Ford back in the wide-brimmed sable fedora of power.
