Sony Joins the Real World and Allows Online ID Changes
Today Sony has announced that players will be able to change their online ID. This may not seem like a big deal but it’s a small quality-of-life change that players have been asking for. So if you’ve been stuck with a horrible username on your PlayStation that you were sure was going to be awesome when you picked it as a 12-year-old, now you can fix that. This feature isn’t live yet but should be available later today.
The change can be completed on either a PS4 or through their online platform. The first change will be free but any change after that will be $4.99 for PlayStation Plus member or $9.99 without a membership. Your previous ID will only be available to you and you can switch back to them at any time without a charge.
Of course, this wouldn’t be Sony without a couple of issues popping up during this roll-out. Turns out that changing your online ID *might* cause some problems with some games. Those problems might be something small, like your old ID will still show, or they might be big, like the in-game currency you bought with real money won’t be available to you.
Sony’s official response to this is that you can change your ID back to your previous ID and that, “Reverting back should resolve most issues.” Yeah, that fills me with a ton of confidence. You can check a full list of games that Sony has tested and see if changing might cause you any problems.
Sony is late to this party as Xbox users have been able to do this since pretty much always. I don’t hate my online name, it’s not easy to say but at least it doesn’t profess my love for something that’s cringingly 2006. Are you looking forward to changing your online ID with PlayStation?
