Critical Role has Critical Success with Kickstarter Campaign
Back in 2015 Matthew Mercer and group of geeky voice actors recorded their first episode of “Critical Role.” The show was a minimum of 3 hours and it was just 7 friends playing Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition in Mercer’s home-brewed setting called Exandria. The show was instantly popular among geeks and followers of the Geek & Sundry website, but it wasn’t long and the popularity skyrocketed. “Critical Role” became such a huge success it introduced people to D&D who may have never sought out a Tabletop RPG if not for this Thursday night game night. The show was built for success, but everyone was a little surprised at the how much they experienced and how quickly. Matt Mercer is a talented Dungeon Master, voice actor, and storyteller and he truly spun an epic tale for Vox Machina (the name of the in-game adventuring group). Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien, and Ashley Johnson have done an amazing job at bringing their characters to life. This phenomenal group is now ready to bring their stories from the theater of the mind to an animated series. The fans are in love with this idea and the Kickstarter is proving wildly successful.
The project was launched on March 4, 2019 with the base funding goal set at $750,000 for an animated special called “The Legend of Vox Machina”. The special was funded in 40 minutes. In less than 8 hours the project had hit 3 million dollars. On March 6th new stretch goals were announced. They decided to turn the special into a series of 4 episodes, potentially add the Briarwoods arc, and a one-shot dungeon mastered by Ashley Johnson. The Briarwoods arc is one of the subplots from the original run of “Critical Role.” Those stretch goals were also smashed. At the time I am writing this, the campaign is over 6 million dollars funded and the “Critical Role” team is having to develop more stretch goals. There are still 40 days left of the Kickstarter.
According to CNBC on March 7th, The Legend of Vox Machina series (and whatever it continues to evolve into) is the most funded film/video project ever on Kickstarter. It broke a record for speed too by raising almost 6 million dollars in 4 days. “Critical Role” has a very dedicated fan base as exhibited by this outpouring of support and it will be exciting to see the final product set to release in May 2020. Until then, Bidet Critters!
