‘Tetris 99’ Game Review
A.K.A. How To Lose Friends Quicker Than With Mario Kart “Blue Shell”
“You vs 98 other players. Blocks fall as all Hell breaks loose. This is Tetris 99.” – These were my initial comments to the rest of the Project-Nerd team, after my first play of the game, and they really haven’t changed!
Let’s start with the basics: Tetris 99 is a free download for subscribers to Nintendo’s Switch Online service and it is exactly what the title suggests. It’s you vs 98 other players in a Tetris “Battle Royale” to see who is the best Tetris player in the world.
But it’s not that simple.
There are various tactics, strategies, and dare I say, acts of treachery, on the level of the “Blue Shell,” to help you survive. You must keep your head on a constant swivel to make sure you are keeping your board clear, but also making sure the other 98 players are not targeting you. They can target you by sending “Garbage Blocks” your way to fill up your board while you are doing the same thing to their boards. Oh, and by the way, you can be targeted by more than one player at one time! Good luck with that!
(Seem simple enough, right? Hold on.)
(See the gray? Those are your opponents throwing you “Garbage Blocks.”)
(WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?!)
(Screw this!! I’m going home!!)
That is an exact run down of my last play of this game before I sat down to write this review. I LOVE Tetris! Always have and always will. This new twist, however, is gonna take some getting used to. If you are not into the multiplayer, “battle royale” style of gaming, then this game is not for you. But if you are into Tetris, and into games like Fortnite, then Tetris 99 is DEFINITELY for you!! My overall score: 3 “Blue Shells” out of 4.
