New Comics Wednesday: June 1st Edition
Every week, Project-Nerd gives me the comics. I read the comics, and then tell you what to buy.
My goal? To make sure you end up with the most well-rounded collection of comics possible. In the best of worlds, it always works out that way.
It’s a surprisingly light week for comics, as only two made the cut for this week’s picks. Here they are:
The Woods #23 (Boom!)
written by James Tynion IV; illustrated by Michael Dialynas; colors by Jason Gonzalez; letters by Ed Dukeshire
“You have one death, use it right.”
Calder’s been a lost kid for this entire series, constantly scrambling to do the right thing but always doing it the wrong way. He’s scared, and he feels single-handedly responsible for the situation that the kids of Baypoint High and the New Londoners are in. His brother’s essentially turned to the “dark side,” and he’s been largely shunned by his friends for his mistakes.
He’s also just a teenager, and that’s some really heavy stuff right there.
Aside from having a huge, very elegantly handled character reveal, this issue builds on Calder’s redemptive arc—which has been fascinating to read and incredibly well executed.
Here’s to you, Calder—find your way and make it count, buddy.
Giant Days #15 (Boom!)
created and written by John Allison; pencils by Max Sarin; inks by Liz Fleming; colors by Whitney Cogar; letters by Jim Campbell
By finding a solid middle ground between serial and standalone storytelling, John Allison has mastered the “Saturday morning cartoon” as comic. This entire issue is a very well thought out story about accidental victory when the girls decide to take part—for various selfish reasons—in a film festival despite their lack of any know-how or experience in filmmaking. It’s one of the more visually striking issues of the series, culminating in a stellar film montage scene by the art team Max Sarin, Liz Fleming, and Whitney Cogar. It may not change your life, but this is a seriously fun book to read, and you can also jump on at just about any point.
