‘Lost Girl: The Final Chapters’ Blu-Ray Review

I am a huge fan of the TV show Lost Girl so when I received the chance to review the final season’s Blu-ray I jumped at the chance. Final seasons are always tricky, this is a shine or sink moment for the show. If you pull it off, the fans will love you forever (Parks and Recreation). If it ends wrong, the fans will remember and be scarred for all eternity (How I Met Your Mother).

When a cult show has such a devoted fan base like the one of Lost Girl…you better pull it off.

Lost Girl has five seasons and follows the character Bo Dennis (Anna Silk) who has been on the run for half her life because she keeps accidentally killing the people she has kissed or slept with. Bo finds herself in the midst of a Fae colony (Fae are mystical creatures most closely compared to fairies, but Lost Girl broadens that idea).

She discovers she is actually a succubus and must learn to control her powers and choose to align herself with the light Fae or the dark. She refuses to choose, is titled “the unaligned succubus,” and becomes a private investigator within the colony with her human best friend and roommate, Kenzie (Ksenia Solo).

Lost Girl has many themes within its seasons; among them is accepting who you really are and loving that person. An extension of that is feeling free to be that person and not feeling forced to conform to the society you live in. “I will live the life I choose” is spoken during the theme song of every episode. Friendship, and especially the importance of a best friend, between women is also a main storyline. Also the power of women, whether physically or mentally or emotionally, is very strong throughout.

Lost Girl treats LGBT relationships like no other show I’ve ever seen. Often the show doesn’t even introduce if a character is gay or bisexual before they start a love storyline with them. I have absolutely never seen a TV show do that and it is very refreshing. Bo is bisexual and her main love triangle is between a male werewolf named Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), and a female human doctor named Lauren (Zoie Palmer).

The show is also very comfortable with sex. Bo is a succubus and feeds off of sexual energy. She uses sex to heal herself, feed, or just to have fun. She can touch people and give them a rush of pleasure and they will do anything she wants which comes in very handy when you’re a private eye trying to get information.

Bo is very open with her sexuality and there are many times in the show when she will meet someone and start a sexual encounter with them immediately. It doesn’t show as much skin as premium cable networks, but it is very good at being sexy (or sexier) without being naked.

Lost Girl has great writers who are very good at making you feel like this all is completely normal, which it is! You simply don’t see it on television very much, so it’s surprising at first. However, once you watch a few episodes and see how no one really even cares that Bo is making out with Dyson and Lauren in the same day, you get into the rhythm and it’s truly a breath of fresh air.

Just a little background; in the Lost Girl world anything supernatural is Fae. This includes werewolves, succubi, sirens, valkyries, vampires, and even ancient gods. Humans have made up their own classes and names for all of them, but they are all Fae and trickle down into subspecies with some being more powerful than others. There is always the light side who keep to themselves and don’t hurt anyone. There is also the dark side who do whatever the heck they want—mainly feed off humans. The light side usually keeps the dark side in check.

The last season is split into two parts, called seasons five and six, but it is all the same storyline that fits together.

Season five starts with Bo traveling to Valhalla (heaven) to rescue a friend of hers who has died (that is a major spoiler from the finale of season 4 so I’ll leave the identity hidden). While there, she is forced into Tartarus (hell) and discovers the new big bad, Hades (played by the amazing Eric Roberts).

While escaping Tartarus she is tricked by Persephone into summoning the ancient Greek gods Zeus (Amanda Walsh), Hera (Noam Jenkins), and Iris (Shanice). Yup, Zeus is a woman. Lost Girl loves to take the patriarchy and turn it right on its head. They were named gods by humans, but are really just the most powerful Fae who ever lived and were banished into another dimension. Those three are the main antagonists through the first half of the season until Hades’s world domination plan kicks in.

Honestly, this season is one of the best. Season four of Lost Girl took its name literally and it was very hard to follow. Season five/six stepped up the game. The Greek gods/Fae became my favorite of all the antagonists and Eric Roberts is an incredible actor and amazing to watch. The show doesn’t always have the best acting from some characters, but he blew Hades out of the water.

It is the finale though, so of course we lost some beloved characters and I was a bawling mess through those parts. It also introduced some new ones which is risky in a last season, but the creators pulled it off beautifully.

The finale episode was everything a finale should be. There was the moment where you almost lost hope in our main character, the big epic battle moments, resurrecting old iconic lines, and the end when you see all the (remaining) characters and know they are going to be ok. I couldn’t have asked for a better finale from one of my favorite TV shows.

PRESENTATION

The Blu-ray includes four discs with five episodes on the first two, and three episodes on the other two. It is a strange organization tactic and I don’t know why it was set up that way. The main menu also shows clips from the first episode on that particular disc and can contain spoilers. It ruined the surprise return of a favorite character which bummed me out.

The video is presented in 1080p high definition in a 16×9 frame format. The show has a very dark color scheme so this picture format really helps you see details you may not on Netflix or even the initial television airing of the episode.

The audio is presented in Dolby TrueHD: English 5:1 and includes English subtitles for the hearing impaired. Lost Girl is a Canadian show so I’m surprised there isn’t an option for French subtitles, but maybe there is on the Blu-ray sold in Canada. I am a person who uses subtitles for all the TV and movies I watch on the internet, but I didn’t need to on the Blu-ray. The sound is crisp and clear with the music and speaking levels consistent throughout. The menu is a little loud, but other than that the sound is perfect.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The Lost Girl: The Final Chapters Blu-ray includes extra footage within some episodes that had been cut from television. Specifically in the special features menu, there are two main features. One is an interview with Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo, and Paul Amos (who plays the wonderful character, Vex) at Dallas Comic Con. It is a look back on the last season, and the series and how all the characters have grown and the interesting moments from the final season. It is an interesting addition, but I wish it could have included Anna Silk and Zoie Palmer as well since they are two of the main characters.

There are also Digital Minis which are five separate videos, about 2-3 minutes long each, talking about the characters, directors, and actors on the series and season five/six. These were interesting, though not detailed or in depth. They had some cute moments and are fun to watch, but are as advertised: mini.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I am sad Lost Girl is over, but I am glad it went out in such a good way. It is a special TV show that hopefully future shows will come to emulate in regards to how they presented relationships and diverse and interesting women. The show is popular, but still very much a cult show and I hope it can gain a larger following after it’s gone off the air like many other sci-fi and fantasy shows. Previous seasons are on Netflix and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes anything they have read in this review.
