The Movie Pass: Jonas Kills the Weekend

Well, the second to last weekend of January came and went and the movie industry hardly noticed. It was a slow weekend at the box office, no doubt due to the crazy winter storm that rolled through the eastern United States (hope all you east coast folks are doing well). “How down were the totals?” you ask. Well, let me tell you. No movie made more than $16 million. That’s a pretty low total, yet somewhat understandable.

Winter Storm Jonas

Bringing in number one this weekend was The Revenant with an even $16 million. Not a bad total and it brings the DiCaprio-led film up to $119 million for its first five weeks. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is number two and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The industry tracks a couple of fun stats: number of theaters showing a movie and the percent change from last week for a movie’s gross. Star Wars: The Force Awakens lost 457 theaters this week and still had a smaller percent change from last week than this week’s first or third place movie.

Revenant

Coming in third this week was Ride Along 2, and after its first weekend of $35 million it only managed to bring in just under $13 million—ouch. Movies four, five, and six all opened this weekend including, Dirty Grandpa, The Boy, and The 5th Wave. Tough weekend for these movies to open, with the weather and all, because you typically like to see new movies beating movies that have been in the theaters for a month. We’ll see how they do next weekend, barring any other crazy weather patterns.

Sundance

The other big news this weekend in the world is the opening of the annual Sundance Film Festival. While I wasn’t able to attend (I’ll have to have my people get in touch with Robert’s people and see what happened to my first-class plane ticket and VIP pass), I did keep abreast of some of the news coming out of Park City. Variety, who may have gotten my pass, reported on a movie that I was interested in, Swiss Army Man with Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano, which has gotten very mixed reviews. Probably should’ve seen that coming for a movie about a man who finds a constantly farting corpse. Sundance has always had some fantastic films so be sure to keep an eye out for more info as it comes in from Utah.
