Cancer and A Video Game

Well it’s been a tough start to 2016 with cancer taking several stars already. But NPR had a nice piece about how a video game helped one family’s fight against cancer. That Dragon, Cancer is a video game created by Ryan Green in an attempt to help him cope with his son’s fight against the deadly disease. Ryan’s son, Joel, was one year old when diagnosed with brain cancer and spent the rest of his life fighting it.

It’s a story that happens far too often—my parents had to deal with my childhood cancer diagnosis, but this one had a different outcome than most. Ryan channeled his pain into what he knew best: designing video games. And what he came up with is That Dragon, Cancer. This isn’t a shooter where you’re fighting cancer with guns and bullets, but rather a story-based game—think more The Walking Dead—from TellTale games.

I don’t have children and I wasn’t old enough to deal with my cancer when I had it, so I can only imagine how hard this must have been for Ryan and his wife Amy. Hopefully this game can help some others who are dealing with a similar tragedy. The game is available now if it seems like something you might be interested it and there is going to be a documentary about this story as well.

Cancer

I want to wish Ryan and Amy Green the best and hope that they are able to find some peace.
