The Movie Pass: Golden Globes

It started with a shocking Friday defeat, but in the end Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant just couldn’t match the seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise.

That’s right, of all movies to finally compete with Star Wars: The Force Awakens it was an award contender that didn’t project to come close to doing the $38 million it did. But even with the impressive opening, the fifth Leonardo DiCaprio movie in a row to open over $30 million, Star Wars’ $41.7 million was just enough to edge it out in the end. The Revenant should see this success rollover to next weekend with award season now buzzing, but even better it will probably see these results factor into the Oscar voting.

Before the weekend’s race, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had already passed Avatar for the all-time domestic box office lead last Wednesday. Not to mention it set yet another record with a $32 million pull for its opening weekend in China. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the first film to ever pass $800 million domestically, and it still has legs.

Daddys Home finished third with $15 million. That’s a massive 48% drop, and it looks like the hit comedy is finally going to be pushed aside for award contenders. The Forest (with $13 million) and Sisters (with $7.7 million) rounded out the top five respectively with Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip finally falling out all the way to eight with just $5.5 million earned this weekend.

Golden Globes Image

Last night was the 73rd Annual Golden Globes, and The Revenant didn’t even need its breakout weekend to prove to Hollywood Foreign Press Association that it was the best picture of the year.

The Revenant won Best Motion Picture (Drama) while The Martian took home the award for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical). These two were the favorites going in with Spotlight (Drama) or The Big Short (Comedy or Musical) being the only two that seemed to have a realistic chance at them. Brie Larson (Room) and Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) took home the Best Actress Awards with Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and Matt Damon (The Martian) picking up the Best Actor wins. These seem to also be the favorites going into the Oscars with many thinking DiCaprio might finally catch his white whale. And Alejandro Iñárritu won Best Director for The Revenant, giving the win to another clear favorite coming in.

Disney’s effort to turn every one of their animated classics into a live-action cash grab has mostly been successful as of late. But it’s interesting to know that now they are remaking remakes with the news flying around about another take on 101 Dalmatians. At least the news has become interesting with Emma Stone in talks to play Cruella de Vil. The notorious Disney villain was actually the only good part of the first live-action remake of the film, ever since Glenn Close was perfectly cast. But this would be an entirely new direction for the franchise, with Stone being considerably younger than the original version of the character. We’ll see how all this news pans out as the film should have plenty of potential with last year’s Cinderella being fantastic and this year’s The Jungle Book looking to carry its own weight.

Silence of the Lambs

In an interesting update, Anthony Hopkins chimes in on his thoughts of one his most prominent roles as Hannibal Lecter. Even with an Academy Award on his mantle from the role in Silence of the Lambs, he regrets continuing the franchise and making both Hannibal and Red Dragon. “I did it once,” Hopkins told The Wrap of his iconic role. “Made the mistake of doing it twice — three times. The Silence of the Lambs is okay. It was a good film.” Interesting thought. We all know the other two didn’t hold a candle to Silence of the Lambs, but continuing a successful franchise is a Hollywood norm and taking on an iconic character for multiple movies is usually an easy career decision. But he wrapped it all up by answering the question if he would ever do it again with a simple and single word. “No.”

Finally, it appears that Sean Penn secretly interviewed the wanted drug lord Joaquín Guzman, best known as El Chapo. The interview was published in Rolling Stone and according to the Associated Press, Penn’s information actually helped lead to the re-capture of Guzman. However, the newest reports surfacing are that Mexican authorities are questioning Penn about the details, specifically why he didn’t provide them with information. Depending on the reports you read, Penn either held valuable information or shared it. What is actually the truth will say a lot about who he is as a person, something many outlets have already questioned in the past.
