“Buy The Rights” Card Game Review

I was fortunate last week to play test a brand new board game created right here in Indianapolis. Buy The Rights is a card game that I’ve been hearing about for quite sometime over the last year and finally there was an event at a local brewery to give me the chance to play the game.

Buy The Rights is a game where each round a player is named “The Producer.” All the other players have 4 different types of cards in their hands. These cards are color coded and are marked “Genre,” “Hero Descriptor,” “Hero,” and “Plot.” The players play one of each of the cards to create their film pitch that they then try to sell to The Producer. The Producer has 20 million to split how they wish and award to the players pitching.

Buy The Rights is a very fun quick witted card game along the lines of Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity except it’s for the whole family. I highly enjoyed the game. There are thousands of possible movie combinations to mix and match with the cards. The real blast isn’t just playing the cards. It’s making up the whole film on the fly. Do you have a title? Do you have a film star in mind as the lead? The game can range in terms of fun depending on who you play with. Some people may be a little shy and have a hard time doing anything more than simply playing the cards, but I’ve noticed that people open up after a few turns.

As The Producer, you have to make the decision of who’s film pitch you’re going to purchase. Sometimes people play pitches that they think you like. Sure buy that. But one of the things I learned to consider is, will the film make money? This is Hollywood. Play by your own rules. Once your turn ends as The Producer, the next player becomes The Producer and now you get to pitch your story!

Buy The Rights is highly replayable as it has thousands of card possibilities. But much like Cards Against Humanity, if you continually play with the same group of people you are bound to have repeats. From what I hear, they are working on expansions to help keep the game interesting if you play it dozens of times with the same people.

Overall, I found this game to be fun and family friendly. This is a game you can take home to mom. Or play with your kids. Or your sister’s kids. If you’re interested in checking out more of this game, it is currently on Kickstarter trying to meet its crowd funding goal.
