The Ten: ‘Dissidia Final Fantasy’ Characters We’d Like to See

In 2008 Square Enix expanded their portfolio by throwing their hat into the ring of the fighting genre. While the original Dissidia: Final Fantasy on the PSP was by no means a smash hit, it did find an audience and proved that Final Fantasy had potential outside of the role-playing archetype. The series sold well enough to merit a prequel and kickstarted Square Enix’s recent push to spin the series off into just about every game type imaginable (e.g. Theatrhythm, All the Bravest, Dimensions, and so on).

However, Dissidia always felt like a missed opportunity. Even the staunchest supporters of the game still felt as if it would have made more sense to play on a home console. Seven years and one prequel later, Square Enix seems to have received the message. At this year’s Japan Amusement Expo, Square Enix announced a new entry in the series to be released in Japanese arcades. If they follow the popular industry trends, the arcade release will be a proving ground for an eventual console release. That being said, the original roster of 22 re-hashed characters won’t fly with this new, larger scale, 3 vs. 3 arcade release. Here are 10 characters we’d like to see based on the merits of interesting skills, fan attraction, and their ability to fill voids in classic Final Fantasy tropes.

Palom and Porom (FFIV)

The Ten FF Parom Porom

The twin mages would make interesting fighters if placed together (à la the Ice Climbers from Super Smash Brothers). White and Black Mage abilities combined with devastating Twincast spells would make these two a unique and entertaining one-two punch.

Edge (FFIV)

The Ten FF Edge

This ninja master would fill the gap for the fast-paced, ‘glass cannon’ style of character. Lighting quick melee mixed with long-distance Throw abilities would create a character with versatile range. Edge would also fill the need for the popular, underrepresented Ninja class in the series.

Setzer Gabbiani (FFVI)

The Ten FF Setzer

While Setzer was a fun and memorable addition to Final Fantasy VI’s already stellar cast, it is his unique class that would make him an ideal Dissidia candidate. Fixed Dice, Throwing Darts, and the Slot ability would make him a good foil for Kefka’s chaotic, unpredictable play style.

Mog (FFVI)

The Ten FF Mogs

With terrain-based Dance abilities, Mog would be a great addition simply to represent for the Moogle race as a whole. Final Fantasy‘s rarely playable mascots deserve a combatant in this best-of-the-best mashup.

Quina Quen (FFIX)

The Ten FF Quina

The oddball gourmand with an insatiable taste for frogs and a stomach like Kirby’s has the potential to be the comedic character every good mashup seems to require. It would also be fun to see s/he eat some of Final Fantasy‘s more overly serious characters whole.

Vivi Ornitier (FFIX)

The Ten FF Vivi

Vivi’s appeal is undeniable. One of the most beloved characters in the franchise, he has proven that even Final Fantasy‘s most overused tropes can have heart and personality. Given the new game’s 3 vs. 3 setup, Vivi’s ability to add magic power to other’s weapons could make him the series’ first predominantly support character.

Edgar Roni Figaro (FFVI)

The Ten FF Edgar

The king of castle Figaro has plenty of built-in reasons to make him a great character in any game. However, when it comes to fighting, his Tools are what make him perfect for Dissidia. The Chainsaw, Drill, and Auto-Crossbow could make Edgar one of the most versatile characters in the game.

Balthier (FFXII)

The Ten FF Balthier

This one is all about cool factor. What makes Balthier great is his character; he is the Han Solo of Final Fantasy and could add some much needed personality to the new Dissidia‘s story mode.

Auron (FFX)

The Ten FF Auron

Auron is the perfect blend of beloved character and interesting skill set. On top of being an excellent representative of another fan-favorite Final Fantasy character class (Samurai), Auron would round out a great X-themed team with Tidus and Yuna.

Ramza Beoulve (FFT)

The Ten FF Ramza

While not a proper numbered entry in the series, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the high-water marks of the franchise. Ramza gets this spot based solely on the fact that Tactics is most often forgotten when it comes to these Square Enix mashups. That being said, in a fighting series where the iconic Job System has been handled so well (see Bartz Klauser and Onion Knight) the game that perfected said system deserves a representative. The secret hero of the Lion War could add a new level of depth and strategy to yet another Square Enix title via a high level of customization. This would make Ramza the ultimate counter-pick character.
