‘Hollywood Zombie Apocaplypse #1’ Comic Review
OK. Easy question. Have you ever wanted Justin Bieber to get it? And by ‘it’ I mean torn apart by a horde of zombies. I can see you nodding your head. Careful, not so hard. The death of Justin Bieber is just one of the many things to see in this first part of Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse published by Zenescope.
Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse is a fun little zombie story with some big names. Quite a few Hollywood celebrities not only appear but star in this book. The main star, of course, is not a star. Yet. Michael May is an unknown who recently got his big break as the lead star of the League of Defenders. He’s the lead with a cast of supporting actors and actresses who have already made names for themselves. I don’t want to spoil and mention everyone that pops up but here are a few faces you can expect to see: Tom Cruise, Selena Gomez, Kevin Hart, Shia LeBouf, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The zombies don’t start their biting and clawing until after everyone shows up for the table read while almost all of them are in their new superhero costumes.
Written by Ralph Tedesco and Joe Brusha, Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse claims to be a horror-comedy and it succeeds quite well actually. The horror part is easily covered with the zombie horde, it’s the comedy at times that can fall flat in these types of stories but here the humor works well. A lot of it is playing on type. These famous actors have a persona we all see and expect them to have, even in their ‘normal’ lives. So here we get to have a little fun seeing how they would ‘act’ in a zombie scenario. I honestly laughed out loud (lol’ed?) when Dwayne Johnson screamed like a little girl and when Tom Cruise stabbed a certain someone in the eye. With a stick. A sharp stick.
David Lorenzo Riveiro does a great job on the art for this book. All of the celebrity characters look pretty darn close to their real-life counterparts. The zombies are gruesome. The babes are hot. The Shia looks like a jerk. Reveiro has it all down.
It’s unfortunate that this is only a two-part story. I’m digging the writing, the characters, and the art. I will be on the lookout for part 2. Hell, maybe if this sells well enough we’ll see more chapters in the celeb vs zombie world. And maybe some more ways for Bieber to get it.
