First Five Comics: Aug. 13, 2014

Welcome to First Five, a series with comic previews this week of new books being released August 13, 2014.

I’m Jon Cooney, here to present the first five books I intend to read this week, and I’ll also give some behind-the-scenes information from the creators, starting with:

First Five Aug13 1-3

1) Walking Dead #130

[Solicit] ‘There were whispers and I was afraid.’

Series writer Robert Kirkman told CBR TV about Negan in the aftermath of All Out War:

“Negan is in his cell, and I think that, to a certain extent, I think that as you read the next few issues you’re going to go: ‘Oh, I see what he’s doing.’ It’s like ‘Negan, Negan, look at Negan, Negan, what’s going on with Negan.’ But there’s like a lot of stuff going on over here that you’re not really paying attention to, and that stuff is going to come to the forefront. And I’m pretty excited about where we’re going next. But, you know Negan is definitely going to be an element, and there is certainly, you know,  a conflict coming up.  And you know, we’re definitely like: ‘What are you doing, Rick? You’re locking this guy up in a basement? You think that is really the best plan?’ And you know, that’s either going to pay off, or you know, be a catastrophic mistake that’s going to change things quite a bit. I don’t know which way I lean. I don’t know, Walking Dead seems to go toward catastrophe.  But there’s a lot of really cool stuff coming.”

2) All-New X-Men #30

[Solicit] Past, present and future collide as the Future Brotherhood exacts their final judgment on the All-New X-Men. Plus, Angel takes control!

Series writer Brian Michael Bendis spoke to CBR TV about writing relationships for the X-Men:

“Clearly I’m a soap opera writer! Clearly there is a big part of me, and it was always face front in Ultimate Spider-Man, but Axel , when he offered me X-Men, said: ‘Well I really think this is going to be a part of you that is, you know,  the thing that  people really do respond to the most.’ And it is. I love relationships and heightened relationships… and the X-Men are always in danger, they’re always heightened… but like the relationships are always heightened, half of them are psychic, so the relationships are always off-kilter, and it’s great to write into. It’s fantastic.”

3) Amazing Spider-Man #5

[Solicit] ORIGINAL SIN tie-in!  The greatest untold secret of Spider-Man’s world has a name – SILK!  Who is this mysterious woman and what does she have to do with Black Cat and Electro?!

Series writer Dan Slott explained his intention for introducing Silk:

“I wanted to do something that had a major ramification to Spider-Man’s world, something that really struck all the way to its core. But at the same time could leave everything you knew intact. This adds to Spider-Man’s world and it doesn’t take anything out of foundation and crumble it.”

First Five Aug13 4-5

4) Batman #34

[Solicit] ZERO YEAR is over, and the events of BATMAN: ETERNAL have put Gotham City in a tailspin, but Batman is focused on finding a killer who has haunted his hometown in secret for years. This special issue features art by Matteo Scalera (DEADPOOL, Black Science) and sets the stage for the next major Batman story in the fall.

Series writer Scott Snyder described the issue to Comic Vine at San Diego Comic-Con:

“#34 I co-wrote with Gerry Duggan. It’s a small detective story. It’s about a serial killer, I wanted to go real dark. It catches you up to continuity. Actually, where we’re going to land with Batman… I’ve said this, but I really want to make it clear, Batman gets back from Zero Year, and it’s actually going to take place, from that point forward, at the end of ‘Eternal.’ So ‘Eternal’ will explain how the bat world got as out there as it is. But we want to really get there and be like, you know, take no prisoners, like instead of having it be something like everything’s the same when you get back, let’s go for broke, it’s the 75th. So #34 will  catch you up to speed. It is a very small, tight, dark mystery. It was an honor to work with Gerry, he’s a really good friend, and doing the ‘Arkham Manor’ series. And Matteo Scalera, who I became really good friends with when we were away in Ireland at the D.I.C.E. convention together, could not be a better guy, and I love his work on ‘Black Science’ and everything. He’s doing the art. I’ll show you some teasers… I’d show it to you now, I’ve got my phone, but I’ll show it to you later, but it’s like really spooky and it’s a very succinct one-shot.”

5) Spider-Man 2099 #2

[Solicit] Life’s not easy when you’re a Spider-Man from the year 2099 stuck in our present. But what’s the bigger danger: bank robbers, or beautiful women? Peter David’s truimpant return to the character he created continues!

Marvel Senior Editor Nick Lowe shared his enthusiasm for the series:

“We’re so excited about the book and between getting Peter [David] back for it and the amazing talent of Will Sliney — not only is he a super talented artist, but he’s a really nice guy. I got to meet him when he was in town for New York Special Edition. It’s a terrific book, and there are some huge things coming. [Miguel]’s going to play a huge part in “Spider-Verse,” and coming out of Spider-Verse is one of the coolest macro stories that I’ve ever heard of that Peter and [editor] Ellie [Pyle] came up with. It’s a fascinating, fascinating concept. I don’t want to talk too much about it now, but it is super mind-bending and really, really cool. It plays into the cleverest areas of Peter’s manic brain.”
