‘Goddess Inc. #1’ Comic Review

Goddess Inc. from Zenescope is a tale that mixes Greek and Roman gods into a modern day story.  As part of the Zenescope Launch, this title is intended to be a jumping-on point for new readers who have yet to grab any of the Godstorm titles from before.

On page one we get a nice little recap filling us in on some much needed backstory.  What we have here is that the gods have been recently united by Zeus.  Zeus believes that all his family will now live in peace.  (Maybe the gods don’t keep history books as they are always warring and scheming on each other).  This book is about Venus in particular; she’s risen in prominence as a fashion mogul and wishes for the human race to worship her like they used to.  You know, like a really long time ago.  So, Venus goes against the will of Zeus and sets out to recruit other gods and goddesses to join her in her quest for dominance.  Sounds like a war is brewing.

Goddess Inc 01 1

Goddess Inc. is written by LaToya Morgan who also writes from AMC’s ‘Turn’ and ‘Shameless’ with art by Manuel Preitano.  In terms of the story, I don’t really feel like there’s too much new or groundbreaking going on here.  We’ve had countless stories involving the gods of old being at war with each other.  Right now we have the excellent Wonder Woman title that travels along the same lines and knocks it out of the park every month.  That’s a legit sports reference….I’m proud of myself.  Some of the dialogue is a bit clichéd and run-of-the-mill.  None of it’s bad by any means, but I was expecting a little more out of it.

The art is simplified but cartoony at times but I think it works.  This book’s art at times is reminiscent of Michael Lark’s work.  The biggest downfall comes down to the book’s layout.  It almost feels like it was a template that they just stuck the pictures into.  Lots of negative space per page.  It really didn’t do much for me.

Goddess Inc 01 2

We can’t go anywhere without mentioning the ‘cheesecake’ factor. This being part of the Grimm Universe, we are expected to see some scantily clad women, and this book does deliever.  Just look at the gorgeous cover from Mike S. Miller & Mohan Sivakami.  SIX ladies in the underwear.  So that’s fun.  At times, yes, I like books with a little bit of cheesecake in them.  This one mostly features Venus getting dressed, but that I can buy.  Venus being the god that she is would be proud of her body and not really care who sees it.

At the end of the day, this book really sits at the level of decent.  I didn’t like it all that much but I also didn’t hate it.  There is some real story potential here.  If scheming gods and drawings of sexy women are your thing, then pick up this book.
