2016 Glyph Comics Award Winners

The 2016 Glyph Comic Awards have been announced at this year’s East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBCC), in Philadelphia. See the full list of winners and their work below.

The Glyph Comics Awards have been presented at ECBCC since 2006 and celebrate the diversity in the comic book industry by recognizing the best works, both about and by, people of color from the preceding calendar year. While it’s not exclusive to black creators, it does endeavor to honor works that have had the greatest contributions to the comic book industry, in “terms of both critical and commercial impact.” By doing so the goal is to encourage more diverse and high-quality work across the board, and to inspire new creators to add their voices to the field.

The name for the awards comes from the blog, Glyphs: The Language of the Black Comics Community, at Pop Culture Shock, which started in 2005 and was created by comics journalist Rich Watson as a means to provide news and commentary of comics with black themes, as well as topics in the fields of black science-fiction/fantasy and animation.

The ECBCC itself is “America’s premiere Black comic book convention encouraging youth literacy and expression through reading, writing and drawing comic books.” ECBACC, Inc. was founded in 2002 by Yumy Odom, an educator, scientist and researcher.
