Netflix Announces ‘Wheelman’
Netflix announced Wheelman today.
The upcoming film stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Grey, The Purge) and is written and directed by Jeremy Rush. Labeled an action-adventure film, the movie depicts the events of a bank heist gone wrong. Grillo’s character is left to discover who betrayed him, save his family and drive around really, really fast.
The movie is produced by a real powerhouse of the action-adventure genre, Joe Carnahan. Carnahan previously worked with Grillo on The Grey. The producer’s credits also include The A-Team, Smokin’ Aces, and The Blacklist.
Jeremy Rush is fairly new to the director’s chair and holds a handful of producer credits for a number of indie films. If there is one incredibly positive aspect of Netflix’s position, it is providing new directors access to an audience, but they can do it more cheaply and with greater ease than the theater route.
If past is prelude, the film has great promise. Grillo impresses as an action star and has an immense background in the genre. Carnahan’s credits include a number of hits with just a few misses (I pity The A-Team). With two solid veterans of the genre to help the newbie director through the process a bit, this movie should be good. The premise of the film feels familiar; bank robbery gone awry, driver has to solve the mystery, but with a new writer/director telling the story and the help of a rising star in the action-adventure world, the take ought to be fresh and new.
