Late Night Cosplay: A Chat with Cosmama about Club Cosplay Denver
Nearly two years ago, Club Cosplay took California by storm. Debuting as a fun and nerdy attraction, Club Cosplay has become a destination event taking over the House of Blues and other amazing venues. And because of its appeal and excitement, Greg and Sarah Shupe decided to partner with the organization to bring Club Cosplay to Project-Nerd’s home, Denver.
With Club Cosplay Denver set to premiere during Denver Comic Con weekend (June 17th), we thought we should ask Sarah what this club is all about.
Project-Nerd: Thank you Sarah for taking the time to join us today. To really get things started we should first find out what Club Cosplay is. What can you tell us about this event?
Sarah Cosmama: Club Cosplay Denver is the Nerd’s Nightclub. We are an all-inclusive judgment-free, nerd-safe environment. We provide night life that caters to the cosplayer. We have live bands, singers, dancers, media, dancing, cosplay contest, and DJs. There’s something for everyone. One big nerd party!
PN: Sounds like a blast! What made you say “Denver needs this type of event”?
SC: Greg and I have been working cons and events for years so we both had been volunteering and attending lots of geek events out here in Colorado. What we noticed was there wasn’t a lot of “party events” and there are soooo many amazing cosplayer/geeks in this state. We felt that the community out here would like a new event to attend to fill in gaps in between huge conventions
PN: So with a local brand behind it and local cosplayers on stage, Club Cosplay Denver won’t just be new and exciting, but it will be something else Denver loves; local. Tell us, how can local cosplayers get involved?
SC: There are so many ways to get involved. One is to simply email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also message Club Cosplay Denver on Facebook. We have cosplayers who help us with street team, others are cosplay judges, performers; so many ways to build the community.
PN: Now your team has been popping up everywhere to tell the world about Club Cosplay Denver. What makes you feel this will appeal to people at opening day at Coors Field or other non-traditional geek events you all have attended?
SC: One thing Club Cosplay gets that other events don’t is walk-ins. Since our locations are in nightclubs we find people stumbling upon the event and want to join in on the fun. We keep and enforce a code of conduct called NERD SAFE that protects all our cosplayers, but Club Cosplay’s motto is “Be who you want to be.” We want to encourage no judgment and a welcoming atmosphere. We don’t want to reverse bully someone who may not be considered the “classic geek.” Nowadays geek culture is all over the media and it has sparked a lot of interest in new fans. We want them to know that they are allowed to be as weird and geeky as they want. And maybe we can introduce them to a new world and help them make some more friends.
PN: Speaking of, where can we find you next?
SC: Club Cosplay Denver will be down in the Springs [Colorado Springs] with one of our Partners—Movie Camp—and we will be attending several small nerd themed club events, and of course Denver Comic Con.
PN: Now, I don’t necessarily cosplay that much myself. Is this still an event for me?
SC: Of course! Cosplay is not required. We have something for everyone. We truly are a judgment free zone.
PN: This sounds very exciting. But besides Club Cosplay Denver it sounds like your production company, Pink Unicorn Productions, has a number of other activities going on. Anything you can share?
SC: Yes we do. Our other event, Nerd Karaoke, will be happening down in Colorado Springs the week after Denver Comic Con. Nerd karaoke involves prizes, trivia, and group activities. You can sing your heart out or simply watch, it’s a really fun time. We also are currently developing a family-focused event. As a parent who cosplays with their child we really want to start building the family community out here and are excited for what we have planned.
PN: Awesome. Well, before we go can you tell our visitors how they can get into the premiere of Club Cosplay Denver on June 17th?
SC: Check the event out on Facebook or go to www.clubcosplaydenver.com, click the “buy tickets” or events tab and you can purchase your tickets. Prices will go up the closer we get to the event so buy them soon. Also keep a look out on our social media for coupon codes and flash sales.
PN: And don’t forget to plug your site and pages!
PN: Thanks Sarah. We can’t wait to attend our first Club Cosplay!
Club Cosplay Denver will premiere Friday, June 17th at the City Hall Events Venue located in downtown Denver. This event is sure to be a great addition to your Denver Comic Con weekend, and is something you will definitely find the Project-Nerd team at.
