Free Comic Book Day With Project-Nerd

Hey everyone, it’s time for Free Comic Book Day.

Publishers, the big ones, get together and release some fantastic content each year for free. This is a great chance to pick up some titles that you may have been interested in but haven’t pulled the trigger on yet. Also, since you’re getting comics for free you can also pick up some of those indie titles you’ve had your eye on since you’re saving some money by getting free comics.

Here at Project-Nerd we wanted to let you know what are staff has planned and what titles we’re excited about. Here’s a list of some of our team members and what they’ll be doing on Saturday.

Favorite Comic Shop: Project-Nerd will be setup for FCBD at Hall of Justice Comics in Parker, CO.

Part of what makes Denver great for Project-Nerd, is how big the geek community is. It’s hard to say there’s just one favorite comic shop here. As much as I miss Elite Comics back in Kansas City, Hall of Justice Comics in Parker, I Want More Comics in Thornton, and Mr. X Comics in Thornton are amazing. And if you need that impossible to find title, there’s the comic mega-store in town, Mile High Comics.

What you’re looking forward to at FCBD:

I’m excited to see DC to release a Suicide Squad comic as there are many people that don’t understand the dynamic of the lesser known team ahead of the movie, but my favorites are always the hidden gems not from the giant publishers. I am stoked to see 2000 AD release a special edition comic, as well as The Tick and Lady Mechanika getting issues pushed out this day as well. But ultimately, Dynamite has done great work with Bob’s Burgers and I am anxious to see what this issue has in store for us.

Location: Omaha, NE

Favorite Comic Shop: Krypton Comics–When it comes to comic shops in Omaha, you can pretty much count your choices on one hand, though I’ll usually stick to Krypton Comics or Legend Comics & Coffee. While Legend is nice, I like Krypton best because they’re bigger, and they have a larger selection. They’re actually a pretty great testament to comics culture, with not only a large and varied collection of comic issues (both new and old) and graphic novels, but also scads of collectibles and table-top games. I’ve always gotten good service whenever I’ve visited, and their staff is friendly and welcoming.

What you’re looking forward to at FCBD:

Out of all the freebies, I’m pretty stoked about Suicide Squad and One Punch Man, though I’m definitely snagging copies of Legend of Korra and Attack on Titan, too. The prospect of finding new titles I haven’t heard about before it always exciting as well.

I’m also looking forward to some of the stuff Krypton, specifically, is doing, like 20% everything in the store and the costume contest (though I’m not sure whether I’m going to dress up or not yet).

Writer: Alex J. Cox

Location: Seattle, WA

Favorite Comic Shop: The comic shop that I’ve been to the most in Seattle is Zanadu Comics.  They’re a small shop in downtown Seattle that carries books from all the major publishers and, better than that, has a large selection of small press and local comics.  The store is jam packed with everything from trades, art books, magazines, statues and posters – everything to meet your collector needs. The staff is always very helpful and if for some reason they don’t have the book that I’m looking for, they can point me in the right direction to find it.

What you’re looking forward to at FCBD:

Hilda and the Stone Forest 2016 Edition – this is the first FCBD for Nobrow Press and this book looks like an all-ages delight.
Love and Rockets Sampler FCBD 2016 Edition – Anything from the Hernandez brothers is always worth picking up.
Bob’s Burgers FCBD 2016 Edition – I’m not usually one for tie-in books, but Bob’s Burgers is a great show and I can’t wait to see how it translates to comics.

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Favorite Comic Shop: The Source Comics and Games – Serving as the epicenter for all things comic book and related things alike for the Twin Cities, the Source Comics and Games is one of my all time favorite comic shops shops. From the sheer size of the location, to the variety of comics, toys, and games available, plus the many tabletop games and events this location sponsors, The Source is like a home away from home. Additionally, serving as the home of the Midwest Comic Book Association (MCBA), who has been throwing the best local conventions since 1998, The Source is the Twin Cities go-to for all my fandom needs.

What you’re looking forward to at FCBD:

Doctor Who: Four Doctors Special FCBD 2016 Edition
Bob’s Burgers FCBD 2016 Edition (because come on, Bob’s Burgers!)
DC Super Hero Girls #1 FCBD 2016 Edition
Grant Morrison’s Avatarex: Destroyer of Darkness FCBD 2016 Edition

Writer: Matt Carter

Location: Seattle, WA

Favorite Comic Shop: Comics Dungeon; I started going here after the first shop I found in Seattle—The Comics Stop—closed down. The Dungeon annexed most of their business afterwards, and I couldn’t have found a better local shop. Chris and Nicole are great people, who are always welcoming to the customers, eschewing the exclusionary aspect that people sometimes associate with comic shops (it was definitely prevalent in them when I was a kid in the 90’s.) The store is also extremely active in the local comics community, supporting local creators, hosting regular Ladies’ Nights and book clubs, running a podcast, and a regular newsletter to customers.

Basically, it’s everything I could want in a shop.

What you’re looking forward to at FCBD:

Boom! Studios Summer Blast FCBD 2016 Edition
Rom #0 FCBD 2016 Edition
Junior Braves of the Apocalypse FCBD 2016 Edition

Hopefully you’re going out and enjoying some great comics. Stop back by on Saturday and let us know what you picked up and what you’re most excited to read.
