Garth Ennis’ ‘The Boys’ To Storm The Small Screen

Garth Ennis is a phenomenal writer. His sense of pacing, wild imagination and unique skill with characterization have often lead to the question; why doesn’t this guy write in other mediums?

Well, he is now… kind of.

It seems that comedians/writers/actor/producers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are mighty big Ennis fans too. Not content with developing Ennis’ and Steve Dillon’s masterpiece, Preacher for the small screen (set to premiere May 22, 2016 on AMC),  they’re now in the final stages of bringing his collaboration with artist Darick Roberston, The Boys, into our lounge rooms also.

And if you’ve read, The Boys, you know how much of a terrifyingly exciting notion that is.

Based around the exploits of a Black Ops, C.I.A team tasked with policing the superhero population, The Boys was the series Ennis ensured fans would “out-Preacher, Preacher.” When it came to the massive amounts of sex, filth, violence and general depravity the series engendered, he was not wrong. These were not the brave and bold heroes of the mainstream comic book world, but a warped, sexually depraved, disturbed and horribly funny collection of miscreants who made the cast of Game Of Thrones  look like Sesame Street.

How Cinemax, who are said to be developing the show will handle such brilliant filth is a mystery, but with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke reportedly writing the pilot, Cinemax, as well as Rogen and Goldberg are betting they can make it work.

But will it?

With Preacher not even debuting yet, it’s hard to say how much of a grasp Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have on  Ennis’ world. Their track record with their own films has been pretty hit and miss and, although their sense of humor is suitably twisted, will they have the ability to highlight the depth of character he creates? Of course, Rogen and Goldberg won’t be writing, but they will be directing the pilot and the responsibility for not only placing the material in the right hands, but presenting it with the right tone is all on them.

Still, the clips that have been released for Preacher so far have been pretty impressive, so fans around the world will be sitting with fingers crossed (conceivably other body parts also), hoping that it’s not too premature for Rogen and Goldberg to try and tackle another Ennis property.

Garth Ennis involvement in the adaptation (if any) has not been confirmed but here’s hoping that Cinemax can be entrusted to bring an uncensored and brilliantly outrageous vision of his comic series to the small screen.

If done properly, when it debuts i would suggest either having the number of a really good therapist handy, or a box of tissues.

What you do with each is entirely at your discretion.
