‘Mother Russia #1’ Comic Book Review

written and illustrated by Jeff McComsey; backup art by Steve Willhite

Mother Russia is a post-apocalyptic zombie tale. Yes, those are a dime a dozen. Everywhere you turn there’s another zombie story out there. How many zombie shows are on TV right now? Fun Fact: I love zombies—lifelong fan. And even I have to admit that there are some bad zombie stories out there. Mother Russia isn’t one of them.

One of the things that helps to set Mother Russia apart is that A) it’s set in Russia (big surprise I know) and B) it’s set shortly after World War II. Not to worry though, it is in English. This would be a very short review otherwise.

Mother Russia comes to us from Fubar Press with the one-two punch of Jeff McComsey, who both wrote and drew the book. McComsey has crafted a wonderful first issue starring Gorshkov, a famous female sniper. She’s been hiding out in a tower, slowly picking off zombies with her sniper rifle. She’s finally forced out of her tower when she sees a young child down among the zombies. And that’s all you’re going to get from me. This book is very enjoyable and I want you to enjoy it too.

Mother Russia Comic 1 1

I thought it was a very interesting choice that McComsey decided to have the first half of Mother Russia basically be silent. There’s very little said until the later half of the issue. That means that there’s a lot of focus on the storytelling in the art. This book nails that. Mother Russia flows from the first page to the last with its gorgeous black and white art.

There’s also a back-up story written by McComsey with art by Steve Willhite titled The Sniper. This back-up tale fills in some of the story of our main character Gorshkov before the zombie outbreak. Sometimes, back-story can seem like a waste, but here it’s only after you read it that you realize it is needed. With only three issues, any information is vital to undersatnding the character.

Overall, I highly recommend Mother Russia. Even if you’re over zombie tales, give this a shot. If you don’t like it, then I’ll owe you a mental hug.
