USPS Releasing ‘Star Trek’ Anniversary Stamps

As Star Wars continues to dominate the box office and you Facebook feeds, it’s Star Trek getting attention from the United States Postal Service.

The agency is set to release a limited set of Star Trek themed stamps to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the show’s original air date. Along with a new movie around the corner and the return of Star Trek to televisions everywhere in 2017, the USPS felt it was the right time to celebrate a cultural icon.

“We aren’t Trekkies, but we love the franchise, especially the tone and aesthetic of the original CBS series,” said Jason Kernevich, creative director of The Heads of State, the design team behind the stickies. “As we were working on the art Leonard Nimoy passed, so that created an even stronger connection to the material for us.”

The USS Enterprise, the Starship Enterprise inside an outline of a Starfleet insignia, a silhouette of a crew member being beamed up and a Vulcan salute have been added to the Stamp roster for 2016 which will probably include a few other geeky things such as a View of Our Planets and Exploring Pluto sets.

The USPS had previously launched Star Trek themed stamps in 1999 as part of its “Celebrate the Century” initiative, but these new stamps will be able to always beam a letter across the country due to them being the sci-fi series’ first Forever Stamps.

As the USPS boldly moves forward with some geeky stamps this year, we hope that the rest of the Star Trek announcements in 2016 will be just as great.
