Cosplay Spotlight: Titan Cosplay

It’s Project-Nerd’s Cosplay Spotlight, where we feature a talented cosplay individual each week.

This weeks interview is a titan of a cosplayer, appropriately known as Titan Cosplay. Titan is a Texas based costumer who has become known for his accurate designs as well as his geeky art. The interview covers all of that, and more.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to chat with you. I want to start with an obvious one… what got you into cosplaying?

TC: I got into cosplaying after putting together an extensive Bane from The Dark Knight Rises costume for Halloween one year. After wearing it to a couple of Halloween parties, I simply wanted an excuse to wear it again!

Tell us about your progression as a cosplayer? Have you had to master any new trades?

TC: I came into cosplaying knowing nothing about it or costume making. The only trade I knew was architectural model making from my time in college. Since getting into cosplay, I’ve tackled various skills like electronics, wiring/soldering, programming, wood working, foam crafting, and utilizing various power tools. The biggest skill I’ve learned has been to think outside of the box on how to complete a piece. There’s always more than one way to do something.

What are the biggest challenges to overcome, in your opinion, when crafting a costume?

TC: My biggest challenge is how to get out of the mental/preparing phase and translating that vision directly into form. I can have some crazy, out-of-this-world ideas that sometimes are beyond my skill level. But that usually forces me to improve my skills and take a chance at learning something new.

What does cosplay mean to you?

TC: To me it is an expression of my fandom for a character. It is an avenue for me to escape the real world and have fun, no matter what age. And it’s a sense of freedom to be who ever I want for a few hours.

Do you like to cosplay at conventions? If so, what are your favorite ones to attend?

TC: I LOVE going to conventions in cosplay. I’ve mostly attended local conventions but my favorite so far has been Comicpalooza in Houston.

Do you feel it’s important to embody the character, you know… really act as them, while in costume, or are you just happy looking like the character?

TC: For me, I embody the character as much as I can. If I’m cosplaying as a villain (my favorite) then I’m going to walk around a convention as a villain and be as much in character as possible, while still maintaining decorum. That is one of the best things about cosplaying, being that character that you love and admire for a few hours. I mean can you imagine a Deadpool cosplayer at a convention NOT mentioning chimichangas or being a wise-crack? You have to have fun getting into that character!

You appear to do more Marvel characters, but I’ll still ask you the age old question… Marvel or DC?

TC: I grew up loving the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. Even the terrible Superman IV! Then came Tim Burton’s Batman movies. My allegiances were solidifed! But as I got a little older, the X-Men cartoons came on Saturday morning television and I have been leaning to the Marvel side ever since then.

Where do you want to take your craft in the future?

TC: I still need to learn sewing! That and learning how to airbrush are my two main goals to accomplish sometime soon.

What advice would you give to somebody that wants to start cosplaying?

TC: Not to plagiarize the great and wise Shia Labeouf, but JUST DO IT! Just get out there and have fun! Don’t let your lack of skill, budget, or experience hold you back from a great time! If all else fails and you can’t figure out how to make something yourself, shoot me a message on my page and I’ll be happy to offer advice and help out as much as possible!

You do artwork too. How do you feel the two (artwork and cosplay) go together and is there one you prefer to do over the other?

TC: One of the main reasons I continue to do cosplay, is that it is a creative release for me. I’ve always been into drawing and artwork as a means for creative expression. With cosplay, I get to create something, then wear it! For that reason, I really do prefer cosplay!

What fandoms, or just movies, games, shows are you immersed in?

TC: Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Firefly/Serenity, Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Cinematic Universe, anything X-Men or Hulk! And of course the new Daredevil show on Netflix. That Kingpin is so awesome!

What do you think defines you as a geek?

TC: Being a geek or a nerd or whatever social stigma you want to call it, it’s a badge of honor really. I remember when the first X-Men movie came out. I was in my freshman year of college and this was before high speed internet was as prevalent as it is today. I remember staying up for hours waiting for the latest X-Men trailer to slowly download over a phone line using Quicktime. And I remember falling asleep at my laptop then waking up hours later to see it finally had downloaded. I watched that trailer at least a dozen times, even slowing it down frame by frame to catch anything I might have missed. I bought and read the movie novel, a “Science of the X-Men” book, and waiting in line for the first showing at the theater. This was my first taste of fandom. At that time I had no idea that was what I was doing. Being a hardcore fan. And now, everyone can be that into something from pop culture. Being a geek to me is being a fan and appreciating something from pop culture to a level that the average person might not do.

Thank you so much for your time. You’ve been great. But I have two really important questions left before we wrap this up…

If you got to pick three people, living or dead, to take to dinner tonight, who would you be dining with?

TC: I guess most people would say they would have dinner with some great figures from history. But for me, I’d like to have one more dinner with my Dad, Grandfather, and Grandmother who have all passed on.

More importantly, what are you eating?

TC: Knowing the people that I invited, marinated steaks, asparagus, and potatoes cooked over a grill!

Thank you for your time!
