‘Zero’s Heroes Annual #1’ Comic Book Review

So, I’m a newbie. Not to the world of comics, but to the world of Zero’s Heroes. I’m walking into this with no prior knowledge. I was worried that me being unfamiliar with Zero’s Heroes would be a hindrance. I’m glad to say it’s not.

Zeroes Heroes Review 1

Writer Aaron Walther presents us with two different stories set within the confines of the Zero’s Heroes universe. The first story, Welcome to New Haven, introduces us to the town of…New Haven. See how clearly the title tells us what to expect of the tale? That’s some smart titling right there. New Haven, for those of you who don’t know, is filled with super-powered people. Heroes and villains alike. In fact, New Haven, is so well known for having a large number of superheroes that they have staged fights for a tour bus line. That’d be pretty cool.

The art for this particular chapter of Zero’s Heroes is handled by penciler Sergio Apodaca, Inker Jesus Salas, and Sara Rude. The art reminds me of Megaman or Pokemon type stuff. It definitely has a manga feel to it. I really dig Rude’s coloring. She uses lots of bright primary colors that make this story stand out.

The second story of this Zero’s Heroes Annual is A Week in the Life of Wreck-Lass. Wreck-Lass is a young girl with the power of incredible strength. And I don’t mean like she can watch all the way through Homeward Bound without crying. She’s physically super strong. Walther gives us a slice-of-life about his unique character that is both humorous and endearing. Wreck-Lass stumbles through life seemingly unable to control her strength. She barely touches a car door and it straight up falls off. She gives a dude a hug and nearly breaks his back. You know, funny stuff. But that strength does come into play when she gets to battle a giant hamster. Best part of the book. By far. By the by, Sara Rude does more than just color. She handles all the art chores for this chapter. I really dig her work. I should see what else she has done…

Over all, if I have to sum up my thoughts and I do since it’s my job and all, I was pleasantly surprised by the Zero’s Heroes Annual. Lucky for me I have another issue to review for you all soon. If that one is as good as this one is, you might have to consider me a fan.
