‘The Infected #1-4’ Comic Book Review

Hound Publishing has dropped a new ongoing that fits snuggly into the zombie horror genre. And yes. There are lots of zombie books out in the publishing world. What makes The Infected different? Different than all of the other zombie styled books out there? This zombie book is firmly set in a world that has superheroes. Outside of Marvel Zombies, this is a pretty rare concept. Zombies and superheroes. Superheroes that have been infected. They are The Infected. Now that title’s making all kinds of sense to you, isn’t it?

In issue one we’re introduced to our main character, Jacob. Like many zombie stories, this one begins with our main character waking up to find that the world has gone awry. Zombie awry. Pretty scary to think about. But, yes, we’ve seen many stories start this way. 28 Days Later and The Walking Dead are just two of the more popular zombies stories that start this way.

Infected Comic Review 1

Chris Hartmann is the writer and creator of The Infected, and so far he’s done a great job. Four issues in and I’m still curious to the mystery as to why Jacob is alive and uninfected after sleeping through a zombie outbreak. That credit must be given to Hartmann. He’s created a world where no one is safe, especially the superheroes. They actually get the worst of it. In issue two, the Superman stand-in of The Infected gets mauled by a gang of zombies. It didn’t end well for him. Hartmann doesn’t pull any punches as the adventure unfolds. And it’s a testament to the characters that I really want to know some more back-story. A prequel maybe. Or some Lost-style flashbacks can help paint the picture of this world.

Speaking of pictures, Dave Mims’ artwork is fantastic. It’s dirty and sketchy. Sketchy meaning it looks like a rough pencil sketch. I really dig the purposely unpolished polished look. In fact it tends to remind me a bit of Bill Sienkiewicz. That’s a pretty big compliment, in case you didn’t know. I can see Mims’ becoming a name over the next couple of years. You wait and see.

Infected Comic Review 2

Overall, The Infected is a unique and interesting take on the zombie and superhero genres. We’ve got some strong characters that beg for more back-story. And again, the art in this book is pretty boss. I’m looking forward to checking out issue 5. Get your hands on this series. If you like unique independent books with a horror twist, then The Infected is for you.
