‘Average Jo #1’ Comic Book Review

Average Jo is a brand spanking new title from Hound Comics. This is actually the first issue that I’ve read from this particular publisher, and I’m quite happy that I did.

Average Jo is the story of an average cop. Well, average for his universe. Due to the number of superhero/super-villain fights, a law has been passed that cops must do nothing more than protect citizens during a battle. Pretty much acting like a human barricade. This is what Jo does, day in and day out. Jo’s life isn’t going so hot right now. His ex-wife is married to a millionaire and his own daughter is terribly embarrassed of him—she doesn’t even call him dad anymore. She saves that for her step-dad.

Average Jo Review 1

Jo and a buddy go to a bar to get a couple of drinks when some men start to harass a beautiful red-headed woman. Jo rises to the occasion and defends her honor. Only, there’s something more to her. You’ll have to read to find out.

Creator John Pross and co-writer Derek Adnams really knock this book out of the park. I really dug this concept, and the writing is frantastic. Its like seeing the world of the Big Two publishers through the eyes of a background character. That’s something you rarely see and here they’re making a whole series out of it. I’m kind of mad that it ended. It’s a punishment that the reader has to wait for the next issue to come out.

The art of Average Jo doesn’t slouch either. Julius Abrera has some great storytelling tendencies. It’s very easy to follow this book from panel to panel. Characters and settings are all crisp and well done. Not like a steak. Although pretty much everyone has the same nose. Maybe they all went to the same nose doctor.

Average Jo Review 2

Overall, I highly recommend this book. I’m very deeply immersed in superhero stories and I always enjoy seeing these types of tales from a new perspective. I can’t wait for the next issue to come out. Seriously, I want it now.
