Spider-Man Swinging to MCU (Marvel)

The news broke last night and social media went crazy. Even being a day late and a dollar short, we can barely contain ourselves. But the world is abuzz about Marvel and Sony reaching a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In another reboot of the famed Spider-Man franchise, Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced a new partnership with Marvel Studios that brings the popular superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This announcement included the news that a new Spider-Man film will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.

But besides the huge news of a new movie that has the talented Marvel team involved, the fans were ecstatic to hear that Peter Parker will be joining the other Marvel heroes in future movies. The two companies announced that Spider-Man will appear in upcoming Disney-produced Marvel super-heroes movie, starting with Captain America: Civil War, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

This agreement worked for both studios as well as the fans. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will help produce the rebooted Spider-Man franchise along with Amy Pascal, who recently stepped down as co-chairman of Sony, in a new production deal.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU.”

Sony retains the theatrical rights to the character, something they only paid $7 million dollars for many years ago, keeping them in the black for many more years in this deal.

Due to the addition of a character to the MCU and some change in production involvement, Marvel also announced some changes to their current release slate. Thor: Ragnarok will now be released on November 3, 2017, Black Panther will be moved to July 6, 2018, and Captain Marvel will be moved to November 2, 2018. Marvel’s answer to cinematically replace X-Men, Marvel’s Inhumans, will not be released in theaters until July 12, 2019. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2‘s release dates will remain unchanged. Sony’s Sinister Six was delayed without any details announced.
