‘The Art of Army of Darkness’ Collection Review

Hard to believe it’s been almost 11 years since Dynamite started publishing the ongoing adventures of Ashley J. Williams. Or Ash, as he’s better known. This is something you probably don’t know about me, but the Evil Dead movies are my favorite film series; Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn is my most favorite film ever. Army of Darkness is the third in the series and was released in 1992. If you haven’t seen those movies, you might want to get on that. Go. Watch them now.

The Art of Army of Darkness collects many of the covers of the ongoing series over the years, including the beautiful John Bolton covers for the The Army of Darkness movie adaptation that were originally published by Dark Horse Comics. Neat, eh? This collection presents every cover and variant cover for the series and a few of the miniseries.

The artists range vastly in style and tone. We have work from then newcomers like Nick Bradshaw, who went on to draw Marvel’s Wolverine and the X-men, and well-established genre artists like 30 Days of Night‘s Ben Templesmith and the Zombie King himself, Arthur Suydam. While not every piece is great, there are quite a few I’d love to have framed on my wall. That is, if my wife would let me hang scary nightmarish stuff on the walls. You know, besides pictures of myself.

Not everything is all sunshine and roses. Well it wouldn’t be with Army of Darkness, but I mean this in such a way as to represent my disappointment. Not every storyline is covered here. Where is my Marvel Zombies VS Army of DarknessDarkman VS Army of Darkness, and Freddy VS Jason VS Ash? If I had to guess, there are some rights issues tying them up from being involved.

This is definitely a series that’s only going to interest the hardcore fans of the series. Or maybe people who like to look at drawings of Bruce Campbell. If you collect Army of Darkness but shy away from buying all the variant cover issues, then this book has you covered. Personally, I love this series and the films, and I have a hard time trying to justify if I should purchase this book or not.
