‘Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament’ Comic Review

In a week filled with great new comic releases comes the release of Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament, a one-shot comic from Top Cow. With high-powered characters and an interesting, historical and religious based background, this was a quick, easy and interesting read, unlike many comics I’ve read before. But I’m always up for something new and different, and I’m pleased to say that Magdalena delivers.

First things first: I’ll admit, this one threw me for a loop for a moment. It’s not the kind of comic I’m used to reading, and it’s sort of unconventional in the subject matter: it’s a fascinating combination of religion and history, with a supernatural twist thrown in there as well which is what really makes the story and pulls everything together. As it’s not something that I come across every day, I was initially a little apprehensive about what I was reading. But going through the first page I was drawn in quickly; the art is lovely and everything in the storyline is easy to follow, and as a one-shot I really enjoyed this. Detective Pezzini is expressive and confident, and throughout the comic she’s fascinating as a character and a storyteller.

One of the aspects of Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament I really enjoyed was the artwork — from characters to creatures, everything popped out of the page and was pretty easy to follow. There were a couple of places where the transitions between scenes were a little tight, but for the most part I really enjoyed reading it. Fantasy art, when it’s well done, is a great way to entice readers and draw them in, and in this case, it’s a big part of what pulls Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament together. This is the kind of stuff I’m used to seeing in TV shows like Supernatural or Grimm, so seeing it put onto pages and done quite well is a really pleasant surprise.

In the end, you’ll find Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament to be a little different from the norm, but that’s just fine. Overall it is well-written, with a good story based on historical and religious standards to go off of. The artwork is good, and given the subject, I thought it was really cool to see what artists (and writers) can do when they’re given characters and a story to work with. The best part about it is that it eventually took quite the dark turn, which is always awesome and unexpected.

Magdalena: Seventh Sacrament is loaded with girl power (not only in the actual comic, but in the writer, Tini Howard, and the artist, Aileen Oracion) and is a great, quick read. Pick it up and read it, and if you enjoy it like I did, I’d definitely encourage readers to go out and catch up on some other comics by Top Cow (such as Witchblade). They’re beautifully drawn, well-written, and chock full of interesting plotlines and characters; a must-read for anyone who loves a good, fantastical story.
