‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters #1’ Comic Review

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I love the recent IDW series. I’m also a huge fan of the Ghostbusters. You either love those movies or you’re wrong. Along comes IDW and smashes the two together that’s all like ‘Yo, Jarrod. Give me your money.’

Yes, Master.

TMNT_GB01-Review-01

We have gotten some tastes of cross-overs from IDW before with both of the Infestation series and the Lone Gunmen story that mixed up with several titles including The Crow and Transformers. Now we have a new series that unfortunately is only a mini-series. This book could really be an ongoing, and I would lap it up month after month. What this book executes so very well is it fits so nicely with both the main TMNT series and the recently ended Ghostbusters. It naturally reads as a continuation of both series. It also doesn’t hurt that this crossover is co-written by Tom Waltz, the man behind both series. Chris Burnham is no stranger to these subjects either. It seems the norm for the average crossover to be written by someone who normally doesn’t handle the characters, and the story line rarely ties into the current books. This series seem hell-bent of defying that.

Let’s not give all of the credit to the writers. TMNT/Ghostbusters has a terrific line-up of talented people handling the art chores. Charles Paul Wilson III knocks the first 5 pages out of the park. Not a real park. A metaphorical one. You know, literally not literally. TMNT regular, Corey Smith, has pages 6-9 and Dan Schoening, regular artist on the recent Ghostbusters, does pages 10-22, and that’s just fantastic. The art actually reflects what world we are in be it TMNT or Ghostbusters. Fans of each series will certainly appreciate this particular touch.

I can’t wait for the next issue to drop. In fact, I want the whole thing. Right now. But since I’m not in charge (anymore) I’ll just have to wait a month. If you like/love either the Turtles or the ‘Busters, you’ll dig this book. You don’t have to have read any back story to enjoy this, but if you’re caught up you’ll love how this works it’s way into the main stories.
