Comic Book Frames Product Review

I’ve been collecting comics since I was a young boy, first introduced to the amazing industry by the likes of Batman and more deeply invested in my adolescence by being introduced to the likes of Michael Turner, Frank Miller, and Alan Moore. At the age of 13 I received my first comic book that needed framing, Witchblade #1 in mint condition. A couple years later I was gifted Green Lantern #1 in fair condition. However, in the mid-90’s there weren’t many options for framing your comics and they both remained bagged and boarded stored away in a box.

As my love for the comic world grew so did my trips to the local comic book stores and conventions. Dallas hosted a great annual show that I attended each summer from a young age into my early teen years. Beyond comics, artwork was something I began to collect as well; i.e. 11×17 prints, something you don’t easily find a frame for.

The issue of this continued for nearly two decades. As a teenager living at home I was not about to purchase custom framing for my collection, yet that seemed to be the only option. Finally, the retailers caught on in recent years offering options in the affordable range. Unfortunately affordable meant cheap in this case and a thin plastic frame with a thin plastic sheet was all that protected the amazing artwork or comic.

Finally, I attended C2E2 in Chicago and was introduced to a vendor that made frames exclusively for the comic collectors and sold them, in large quantities I might add, at shows across the midwest and online. Collector’s Resources is responsible for filling the gap giving us an affordable and solid solution. How did these affordable options stack up against the choices of custom framing or the cheap plastic options? Luckily I was given a few samples to find that out.

Measuring the success of the product came down to three categories: the quality of the build, the appearance of the frame, and the overall value I felt getting these. Without a sturdy built frame, you aren’t going to spend anything more than you would for the cheap solution at Walmart. And without a good look, the frame will never make it on the wall. But ultimately, when you’re spending all that money at a large convention in the first place, the overall value of the product has to convince people to open their wallets with Collector’s Resources instead of the many others.

Build

The frames are offered at an affordable solution at the shows, although they aren’t cheap. You’ll spend more than you would at a major brick and mortar store getting the product from X event to house your prized titles from your collection, but unlike some unique products, the cost reflects the quality here in every way.

I myself happen to have some of those aforementioned “cheap” products from the blue and red common sources for cheap household goods….but that’s just it. They’re cheap. As low as the price is, so is the plastic quality, and that’s where Collector’s Resources comes in to play.

These aren’t plastic frames but rather sturdy wood built from recycled materials. A little bit of research and some quality control measures were taken to see what the general audience might experience with the frames. It turns out, you can handle these things incredibly rough or, should an accident happen via knocking one off the wall, dropping it, stacking it or, you name it, few patrons have had an issue with durability. In fact, these are the most durable frames I’ve encountered.

Appearance

While we all might spring for a sturdy or even cheap option, no one can argue that our comics deserve to be well dressed when out on display. Collector’s Resources has your collection more than covered with designer appeal. Everything about Collector’s Resources frames speaks comic collector. They definitely aren’t designed to be ornate and decorative in the sense of matching up with flowers, but they have a matte black finish that looks complete and matches a variety of styles. If you want to go unique or different you definitely can do that as well. The ultimate answer to this is Collector’s Resources amazing Batman frame. It’s shaped in the Batman logo and houses three comic books.

There’s a museum quality line, with the upgrades being very obvious, as well as styles that can house graded comics, multiple titles, and even themed like the aforementioned Batman frame. There are actually other vendors who do similar products, but this is actually the best frame design I’ve seen when you combine all of the customized attributes, cost and sturdiness

Value

Build and appearance are the bread of this sandwich, but at the end of the day the consumer wants the meat in the middle; a.k.a. the value. Sure they’re sturdy and, yeah, they look good. But do I feel like this is where I need to invest some money when I’m already stretching myself thin at a comic book convention?

The answer is undoubtedly yes.

Build and appearance are important but they can often be overshadowed by a steep price tag. As a collector who spends a good portion of designated convention money on collectibles, spending a fortune to house those collected items is somewhat out of the question. Collector’s Resources does a great job giving you everything you need in a comic book frame without gouging you for price. Even the unique options are priced fairly.

However, if you do have money to spend, a custom option might be something to consider. I won’t include the pricing here considering the range in products you can get from Collector’s Resources, but I will say that everything truly is affordable and more than fair up against anything that might be considered a source of real competition.

Final Thoughts

Over the past couple of years the comic book industry has been thrust to the front of pop-culture relevance. Although many of the publishers are still struggling to pull huge numbers, they’re making up for it at conventions, in the theaters, and with collectibles. Due to all of this attention, many other options have begun to show up, appearing both affordable and somewhat durable.

But most of those options should be dismissed. Tony Pucilowski and Rob Myers give us a high quality product with the Collector’s Resources. It is extremely easy to use, as durable as they come, and looks fantastic hanging on the wall or even standing on a shelf. If you don’t believe me, visit Collector’s Resources and check them out for yourself.
