Grimm Fairy Tales: Age of Darkness #0 Review

Grimm Fairy Tales Age of Darkness 0 CoverGrimm Fairy Tales is a long running series that prides itself on ‘retelling classic tales for a new generation’. Age of Darkness (issue #0) is a new event in these tales, with an old threat resurfacing and threatening the GFT universe.

This issue serves not only to introduce events that will be happening in the future, specifically events in the series’ 100th issue which is due out in July, but also does a great job of introducing new readers to the universe, the characters, and the conflict. I found it to be a fast-paced, exciting adventure, and for readers who want to get into the story but haven’t caught up on the previous issues, issue #0 of Age of Darkness is a perfect point for them to pick up and get into the story.

There’s a definite ‘fairy tale’ and fantasy feel throughout the comic, but there’s also the underlying feeling that something much bigger, much darker is coming. We see scenes from ‘long ago’ that tie in with scenes that feature present-day events, tied together seamlessly through art and dialogue. Characters are quickly introduced and the stage is set—something big is going to go down. We’re given a little taste of what’s going to happen in the future, and simply judging by the intensity that I saw in these few panels, it’s going to be a crazy ride.

Grimm Fairy Tales Age of Darkness

I’ve always thought that one of the things writers and artists have to be the most careful about when dealing with fantasy (and especially retellings of fairy tales) is to avoid the cliche, to be careful to present something that’s interesting and new and not completely reminiscent of something that’s been done, and I think that Age of Darkness #0 does an excellent job of doing that.

This issue will tie in with Grimm Fairy Tales’ landmark 100th issue, due out in July.
